A Portrait

The Observation Tower, situated in the city’s Rotehornpark, was reopened on the 27th July 2006. It is one of the most important buildings in the Magdeburg skyline, offering Magdeburg residents and visitors a wonderful panoramic view over the city on the Elbe river.

The Tower was constructed in 1927, during a dynamic period of city development, as the crowning feature of a collection of pieces constructed for the German Theatre Exhibition. Professor Albinmüller acted as the artistic director behind the construction process. A lift was installed in the altogether nearly 61m high tower from the very beginning, in order to allow visitors easy access to the 45m high viewing platform. They also have the option of enjoying the 252 step climb to the platform, where they are rewarded for their efforts with a fantastic view over the city. Damages sustained during the Second World War and a lack of maintenance led to the closure of the tower on the 22nd September 2001. Now, after an extensive renovation process lasting nearly three years, this Magdeburg treasure is back sparkling like never before!

Visitors can reach the distinctive viewing platform by foot or they can take the lift. When they reach the platform, they can enjoy a wonderful view over the Elbe river and the historical Altstadt (Old Town) with its prominent cathedral and other medieval church buildings, for example St John’s Church. The view north of the Elbe reveals a further highlight among the new constructions: the Millennium Tower in the Elbauenpark, while the Bördelandhalle and new stadium can be viewed to the east. When the weather is clear, the Brocken Mountain is even visible in the west.
Only 50 people are allowed on the observation platform at any one time. This is controlled by a turnstile at the entrance to the tower.

11,000 Visitors in the First Four Weeks

The reaction to the Observation Tower is further proof of an amiable quality of Magdeburg residents: once something has gained a place in their heart, it will never go away.  Magdeburg residents and visitors have certainly made a place in their heart for one of the most prominent constructions in the Magdeburg skyline – the Observation Tower in the Rotehorn City Park. In just four weeks following the opening of the tower on the 27th July 2006, 11,000 visitors came to enjoy the fantastic views over the city by the Elbe river.
