Elbauenpark - Attractions

General Information

The Elbauenpark Magdeburg is located on the Cracau Meadow, an area soaked in history. The youngest park landscape in the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt has not only captured the hearts of Magdeburg residents and visitors, but become an essential link in a chain of historical and well-established parks and gardens. Nowadays, the unique “cultural landscape” of the Elbauenpark, with its Millennium Tower, Lake Stage, Butterfly House, playgrounds, sport facilities, pieces of art, themed gardens and many other attractions, is quite clearly one of the most prominent attractions Magdeburg has to offer.
With a wide range of facilities for relaxation, entertainment, culture, education, health and sport, the Elbauenpark has developed an independent reputation as a meeting place for all generations. Appealing events such as the Elbauennight, Hot-Air Balloon Glow, park festivals, concerts and ballet performances attract visitors from near and far.

Vantage Point on the Former Landfill Site (41/C3)

On the way to the vantage point

The second highest attraction in the Elbauenpark is the vantage point located at the top of the 40 metre high landfill site, which has been recultivated in line with modern ecological standards. From here you can enjoy a view over the entire garden landscape from east to the west including the Magdeburg skyline.
Whatever the season, the Elbauenpark is always stunning! Two sets of steps lead to the vantage point on the landfill site, one in the north (close to the Fallow Deer Enclosure, 182 steps) and one in the west (close to the labyrinth, 176 steps)

-  Not wheelchair accessible.
-  Opening times: accessible throughout the year

N.B.: The highest vantage point in the park is the platform on top of the Millennium Tower

Viewing Jetty (27/A3)

The viewing jetty is located on the western edge of the Small Cracau Meadow and extends over the park area next to the summerhouse. It forms a bridge over the adjacent Elbe cycle path and protrudes over the Old Elbe, where, at the end of the jetty, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Elbe landscape and watch the sporting activity on the Elbe cycle path in the north and south.
-  Wheelchair accessible
-  Opening times: accessible throughout the year

Fallow Deer Enclosure (50/D2)

The fallow deer enclosure is located at the foot of the former landfill site, close to the perennial garden. In early 2006 only 5 animals inhabited the area measuring over 10,000 m2, these being the wild-coloured fallow deer “Fion”, the white fawn “Gino”, the white calf “Flöckchen” and a wild-coloured doe with her wild-coloured fawn. Since then the number of animals here in the wild has increased to 12, due to offspring displaying all four coat colours: black, white, wild-coloured and porcelain-coloured. The park enclosure is ideally equipped for the fallow deer. The occasional busy and noisy event does not disturb the animals as they have plenty of areas and dens into which they can withdraw.
Of course, the animals are the stars of the Elbauenpark. Many visitors come to the park to observe the deer and enjoy the fawns actively frolicking in the enclosure.
-  Wheelchair accessible
-  Opening times: all year round

Assault Course (57/D2)

The 4Fcircle Assault Course can be found between the sports area and the shooting walls. It offers a balanced system of 14 exercise apparatus/stations, which give you the chance to test and improve your coordination, strength, stamina and flexibility outside in the fresh air. Information boards are provided to help you get the most from the apparatus. The assault course is a great alternative to a regular fitness studio, particularly as it doesn’t demand a membership contract and is extremely good-value for holders of annual, day or evening admission tickets to the Elbauenpark.

-  Opening times: all year round

Foucault Pendulum in the Millennium Tower (10/A2)

On entering the domed hall, the biggest open area the tower with a height of around 20 metres, you will be immediately impressed. In the centre of the domed hall stands the tower’s newest exhibit, the Foucault Pendulum. The pendulum is the most well-known and most demonstrative proof of the Earth’s rotation on its own axis.

Frisbee / Disc Golf Course (31/A3)

Frisbee - also known as disc golf - is a sport that combines all the advantages of a healthy, uncomplicated and above all fun recreational activity. Frisbee golf has no age limit. The rules are very simple; just complete the obstacle course in as few throws as possible.  Wherever the frisbee hits the ground, even if in an awkward position (e.g. behind/in a tree or bush) is where you have to take your next throw.
At the end of the course, the total number of throws is calculated for each player. The player with the lowest total of throws wins the game. There are 9 rounds and baskets over a total distance of 683 metres. The course begins close to the rose garden on the Small Meadow.
This Frisbee / Disc Golf course was the first of its kind in the former East Germany. Frisbee discs can be purchased from the main box office.
-  Opening times: all year round

Rule 1
Please show consideration for passers-by, other players, animals, plants, trees and all other features.

Rule 2
Before throwing, each player should ensure that nothing/nobody is crossing the area.

Rule 3
The start of each round is marked. Following this, the disk should be thrown from where it last landed, until it reaches its target.

Rule 4
Each round is started by the player who needed the fewest number of throws in the previous round.

Rule 5
After each player has thrown once, the player furthest away from the basket continues, even if he/she needs more throws than the other players.

Rule 6
After the target has been reached the number of throws is written down for each player before moving on to the next round. The person who has the lowest total of throws at the end of the course wins the game!

Garden Art

The Elbauenpark, located on the eastern side of the Elbe river, combines an Elbe meadow in its natural form with an artistically-designed park landscape. The landscape architecture shows the artistic manner in which time has left its mark on the entire area and become integrated into a modern garden landscape. Take a look at some of the examples of this garden art:
-  European Garden (3/B1)
-  Among the Ramparts
-  Paradise Garden (62/D1)
-  Rose Garden (32/A3, 47/C2)
-  Rhododendron Walk (55/D2)
-  Perennial Garden (54/D2)
-  Sunken Gardens (43/C3)
-  Seasonal Bloom (6/A1, 23/A3, 33/B3, 34/B3)

Green Path – Hands-On Education (4, 28, 64)

What is an ecosystem?
Is water alive?
What are renewable raw materials?
These and many other questions are all answered along the Green Path – Hands-On Education, which is particularly ideal for school groups. The path offers a wide range of activities for a broad selection of educational topics, such as nature and species protection, biology, history, mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Labyrinth – Find Your Way! (46/C2)

In spring 2004, an interesting new attraction opened in Magdeburg’s Elbauenpark for you to explore.
This 600m2 large labyrinth awaits you at the foot of the former landfill site. It consists of steel trellis and wooden fences which support 1400 climbing plants, mostly the Russian vine, but also roses and clematis, and which help to make you seem very lost! In spring over 15,000 tulips form a multicoloured ribbon which flows through the labyrinth area, underneath the climbing plants. A hedge made out of 300 hornbeams encloses the entire labyrinth. All routes add up to a length of 500 metres and the labyrinth has five entrances and exits. A pool measuring 40m x 2m runs centrally through the labyrinth in order to disorientate you even more! But don’t be afraid, there is a way out!
-  Wheelchair accessible
-  Opening times: all year round

Structural details/materials used
- 1225 tonnes of soil
- Approx. 600 tonnes of recycled concrete and ballast

Climbing Rock – An Urban Alpine Feeling (42/C3)

The triangular, Y-shaped structure located in front of the former landfill site is 25 metres high, making it the and highest artificial climbing rock in the region. With its various climbing routes and different degrees of difficulty, the climbing rock is suitable for professionals and amateurs. It is made from concrete sections obtained from former concrete tower blocks in the Olvenstedt district of Magdeburg. The concrete sections were stacked to form a Y-shape then coated with an outer layer of sprayed concrete.
Climbing times: all year round, only after previous registration and under instruction.

Shooting Backstop (56/C2)

This backstop was used by the military to intercept bullets fired in training. There were several of these situated on the troop drill ground. The only backstop to be restored had been written on in large letters by the Red Army: „Der Sieg gebührt dem, der über die großartigste Technik, die beste Organisation und Disziplin verfügt!“ (“Victory belongs to those with the greatest technology, the best organisation and discipline!“). For the BUGA 1999, this area was transformed into a simple and hardwearing event area. The backstop architecture acts as a dominant “concert shell”. The stage has a capacity of around 350.

Pieces of Art

Alongside the gardeners and landscape architects, artists also worked to create some of the areas within the Elbauenpark. They integrated the history of the area and its riverside location into their work:

Butterfly House (63/D1)

Containing 200 exotic butterflies (approx. 20 species) from four continents, the Butterfly House is one of the main crowd pullers in Magdeburg’s Elbauenpark. The glass pavilion is home to delicate butterflies such as the Paper Kite, Scarlet Mormon, and Owl butterflies, Owlet moths, the Blue Morpho butterfly and the Atlas moth, with a wingspan of approximately 30 cm, making it the second largest butterfly in the world. A large selection other exotic butterfly species can also be seen here, alongside a wide variety of tropical plants belonging to over one hundred different species. A waterfall spills over into a pond which is home to coi carps and other fish and which flows into a small creek that runs through the “jungle”. Giant snails and impressive plumed basilisks roam the large terrariums in the Butterfly House, while the Kikuyu White-Eye bird, the so-called “flying pest controllers” also call the tropical pavilion home. Admission charges for the Elbauenpark include entry into the Millennium Tower and the Butterfly House.

Playhouse (1/B1)

This round and crazily colourful playhouse is located in the northern area of the Small Cracau Meadow. In this area, the kids are in charge! Children aged between 0 and 14 years are able to use the large, lavishly designed inner and outdoor areas to their heart’s content, without paying a penny! Of course, adults are also welcome!
The Elbauenpark Playhouse is run with academic assistance from the Faculty for Social and Health Care at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.   Thanks to projects carried out by the student, the playhouse is able to constantly offer new and exciting activities that the children absolutely love. These activities focus on creativity and movement projects and are open, age-appropriate, gender-specific, multifunctional and voluntary. The children and their right to participate and be creative are our primary focus. The playhouse is a huge “in and outdoor play area” with the benefit that it is not dependent on good weather. It constantly offers new challenges and adventures for children, their families and their friends.

The Development of the Playhouse
The playhouse was opened in 1999 on the occasion of the German Federal Garden Show (BUGA). In the lead-up to the construction of the playhouse, an ideas workshop was initiated by the BUND Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt Federation), where children designed models of their “dream house” for Magdeburg. Where possible, these designs were then drawn upon in the subsequent design competition run by the Faculty for Architecture at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. A jury, which also consisted of children, then stamped their seal of approval on the chosen construction drawings for this unique house, which is extremely popular among its guests.

Themed Gardens

Landscape architects have used the Small Meadow to show the kind of imaginative stories that can be told using art and nature. 15 themed gardens were designed for the BUGA 1999, with the aim of telling the tale of Magdeburg and its surrounding area.
